In this hot mess musical, a group of close friends struggles to navigate the tragedies of life. Guided by poor decision-making and maybe too much alcohol, these buddies try anything to find happiness while the ties of friendship fray. This dark musical comedy is a celebration of the not-so-happy ways in which we persevere, grow, and change—whether we want to or not. Cheers! World Premiere. Since this was a world premiere I had a lot of fun knowing I was getting the opportunity to help define these characters in their first full scale introduction to the world. I loved getting to know each of them and to highlight the quirks about their personalities through their clothing. The songs from this show still run through my head daily and are so relevant. The characters capture the comedy and struggles of trying to be happy and figure out who you are when you happen to be surrounded by death and pain. Photography by Steve Wagner.
Venus
Costume Designer
Venus is inspired by the real-life story of Saartjie Baartman. The play is set in the early 19th century and travels from the circus where she performed, to the courtroom, to the anatomist table where her body was eventually dissected and then displayed in a Paris museum until 1974. As a designer I really loved the aesthetic of the world we created inspired by the color and energy of the exploitative 19th century circus, but through a modern visual lens with modern day silhouettes. Experiencing the play from the audience I felt proud that this aesthetic really connected her story to present day. The sexism, racism, and exploitation that Saartjie experienced in her life still exists today. The world we created opened up a space to examine that. Her story will always stay with me from working on this tragic, perfectly paced, poetic, visually-stunning, powerful play. Photography by Zach Rosing.

Thurgood
Costume Designer
Thurgood is one man play about the life of Thurgood Marshall. Designing for this play was an absolute joy and honor. Sarah May, the director of the play captured the power of this theatre in her director notes so clearly I wanted to share an excerpt with you: "It is so important to revisit the struggle for civil rights in this country and to celebrate all the progress that has been made. At the same time recent headlines remind us that the fight is far from over. As we pay tribute to the past we must keep the conversation open about the present.... We hope the story of this giant [Thurgood Marshall] will inspire new leaders and future generations to step forward and commit their lives to creating an America where people can truly live together and receive "equal justice under law." I was so proud to work with this team on this project. Photos from Ensemble Theatre featuring actor Greg White.
